Community inspiration

Dear Editor:

In April of 2011, after 30 years as weekenders, my wife and I became full-time residents of Great Cacapon. We believed we were fortunate just to have the opportunity to live in the country. That is, until we met Rick Dunn, Great Cacapon’s postmaster.

The post office is always professionally manned, organized and helpful and Dunn is personable and fun loving, especially when the holidays come around. He surprises his customers with different and creative outfits representing each holiday, be it Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas...well you get the idea.

If everyone approached their job with such professionalism, enthusiasm and vigor, every community would be a better place.

As we downsized from our house in Maryland to our cabin in the woods, Rick Dunn was invaluable in helping us distribute our extra household wares to anyone in need. It was our hope that not only would the community be helping us but that in return we would be helping our community. He answered all our questions about setting up our lives in a new town be it mail delivery, changes to car titles, doctors and so much more.

There is also a book exchange, free of charge, for all to share within the post office. He and a friend took it upon themselves to decorate the bridge leading into Great Cacapon for the Christmas holidays as well as the post office, plus run a canned food drive for our neighbor’s holiday meals.

Needless to say, we look forward to dropping in to pick-up our mail each day. It’s impossible to leave without a smile and remember to be grateful for such a dynamic personality behind the counter.
