Bennett wins another title

Berkeley Springs senior Tory Bennett captured his third tournament title of the year in the 182 pound weight class at the Willie Walter/Jaye Copp Holiday Tournament at James Wood High School on Thursday, December 29.

Bennett defeated L.J. Barlow from Haverford School, Pa. in the 182 pound final, 8-3. Bennett, who improved to 26-0 on the year, reached the championship match by recording three consecutive technical falls.

Matt Parkinson and Kyle Shambaugh were the only other Indian grapplers to place among the top six in their respective weight classes.

Parkinson finished third at 220 and Shambaugh was fifth at 195.

Parkinson, who lost to the eventual 220 pound champion, Mark Bean, from James Wood 3-2 in the championship quarter finals, won four consecutive matches, including a 3-2 decision over Musselman's Derek Estep in the consolation final. With the win, Parkinson improved his record to 14-3.

Shambaugh finished the tournament with four wins against two losses.

Shambaugh avenged a loss in the championship quarter final by beating Anar Altangerel from Potomac Falls, 2-1, in the fifth place match. Shambaugh is now 22-5 on the year.

Musselman won the tightly contested team title with 146 points. Eastern View, Va. was second with 145, while Buckhannon-Upshur and Potomac Falls, Va. tied for third with 139.5 points each. Berkeley finished 12th in the 17 team field with 68.5 points.

The Indians will wrestle this Friday and Saturday at the Jefferson Duals Tournament in Shenandoah Junction.
