Town police dog recovering

The Town of Bath Police Department’s K-9 officer, Butch, is recovering from
surgery after collapsing over the New Year’s holiday. Butch has served with the police force for nearly four years as police chief Craig Pearrell’s partner.

Butch is back home with Pearrell after spending several days at a veterinary hospital in Winchester. The police chief is still awaiting the results of a biopsy taken during Butch’s treatment.

He said veterinarians ruled out poisoning or other
intentional tampering with the dog.

The German Shepherd will take some time to recover, but is already responding to his commands and eating regularly, Pearrell said.

Butch will likely be evaluated by his original police trainers before returning fully to work, he said.
