Lady Indians third at GEICO Invitational

Berkeley Springs traveled to Cabell-Midland High School last weekend for the GEICO Invitational Cross Country Meet. It was an important event for the Indians, because it gave them the opportunity to run on the course where the state meet is held, and the chance to face many of the Class AA teams across the state. It was also a very competitive meet with strong individual and team competition.

If the results are any indicator then the girls cross country team has an opportunity to be in the thick of things when the state tournament returns to Cabell-Midland High School in October.

The Lady Indians finished third behind Fairview (Oh) and Philip-Barbour, while Gallia Academy (Oh) and Scott rounded out the top five teams.

Although Berkeley Springs may not have a superstar, they have a solid team. Just like a week earlier when they won the Musselman Invitational, Berkeley got a strong showing from all five runners, led by sophomore Sarah Younker who finished in 16th place overall. Macy Houck placed 18th, Lacee Fulton was 27th, Kayla Mundey was 34th and Chelsea Hessler finished 53rd.
"We seem to be running well as a group," said Berkeley Springs Coach John Rowland. “Hopefully we can get someone to consistently crack the top 10 or get everyone to improve by a few spots. I am pleased with the way we ran."

Peyton Adkins from Gallia Academy was the overall winner of the girls race in Class AA.

The boys did not have enough runners to score in the team race won by Fairland (Oh), but Casey Doxzen finished 22nd, Corey Shetler was 39th while freshman Zac Simmons and sophomore Kirk Spielman finished 102 and 125, respectively.

"I was really pleased with Casey Doxzen," Rowland said. “For him to finish 22nd in this field in only his fifth varsity meet was impressive."

The Indians travel to Brunswick, Md. this Saturday to compete in the Brunswick Invitational.
