Girls soccer team breaks through

For the first time in two years Berkeley Springs High School girls soccer team got to celebrate a victory.

The Lady Indians got a pair of goals from Michelle Williams and a goal each from Sarah Allman and Leah Kidwell on their way to a 4-2 win over Petersburg on Tuesday, August 31, at Morgan Field.

"We needed that," said Berkeley Springs Coach Rocky Riffle of the win. “We've come close a few times over the past year, but hadn't been able to ring up a win. Today the girls played well and they played with passion. These girls are working hard and getting better each and every day and it is starting to pay off."

Brooke Young assisted on two goals and Williams on one.

Frankfort invaded town and ended Berkeley Springs short-lived winning streak two days later, 6-2.

Shelby Kinder gave the Indians an early lead when she scored on a rebound from about 20 yards out, but two late first-half goals gave the Falcons a 2-1 halftime lead, and they didn't look back on their way to the four-goal victory.

"They are really fast," Riffle said of Frankfort. “They have two girls that can really run. We are going to have to change up our defense a little the next time we play, because we don't have anyone that can run with them. I think the one girl is the West Virginia sprint champion."
The win over Petersburg should do wonders for the team, according to Riffle.
"The win should really boost our confidence," Riffle said. “We got over a big hurdle now and I expect us to win more games before the year is over. These are a good bunch of kids that work hard and I am confident that they will record several more wins in the upcoming weeks."

Berkeley Springs, currently 1-4, plays at St. James Academy on Friday.
