Indians shutout, 35-0, as offensive struggles continue
Berkeley Springs has had a tough time generating offense during the first two weeks of the 2010 football season. In week one, Clarke County held the Tribe to one touchdown while this past week, against South Hagerstown, the Indians were unable to find paydirt. In fact, the Rebels held the Indians to only 73 yards of total offense on their way to the 32-0 shutout.
"We are just out of synch offensively," said Berkeley Springs Coach Angelo Luvara. "We were doing things well this week that we didn't do well last week and things poorly this week that we did better last week. The offensive line played a lot better, but we just have to be a lot more consistent on offense. We talk about it all of the time, but we just need to get better each and every day."
It wasn't that Berkeley's defense played poorly. In fact, Luvara thought the defensive effort was pretty good. But, they are simply spending too much time on the field as Berkeley's offense searches for answers.
"I thought the defense played a lot better," Luvara said. “They hit a few big plays on us, but overall I thought the kids played well, but we just couldn't keep their offense off the field. It is tough to play that many minutes on defense without having a breakdown here or there. Overall I was pleased with their effort and thought they played well."
South Hagerstown took advantage of a Berkeley Springs turnover to score the games first touchdown on a six yard run by Nick Stubbs, giving the Rebels a 6-0 lead.
An 11-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Phillips to Jordan Nicewarmer and a 38-yard interception return by Brandon Hess in the second quarter gave South Hagerstown a 19-0 halftime lead.
Berkeley Springs offense continued to struggle after the intermission and South Hagerstown tacked on a couple of third-quarter touchdowns for the final margin of victory.
The Indians have a much needed bye week before hosting Frankfort on Friday, September 17.
"I think this (the bye week) comes at a pretty good time," said Luvara. “It will give us a chance to make a couple of changes that we want to make. It is hard to do that during a regular week, but with the extra time we should be able to make those changes. But, for us to become a better team we have to get more consistent. We need the receivers and tight ends to catch the ball, we need for the running backs to read the blocks and we need Zach (White) to hit the receivers when they're open. We have a lot of confidence in Zach and the rest of the kids on offense, they just have to get some confidence."
