Grand opening scaled back due to small donation
The Morgan County Commissioners scaled back plans for the September 25 grand opening of the new Morgan County Courthouse because of a smaller than expected contribution from Milestone Construction.
Milestone, the contractor for the multimillion dollar project, offered only $500 rather than $2,000.
CNB Bank donated $2,500 and courthouse architect Silling Associates donated $2,000 toward the event.
Commissioner Stacy Dugan made the announcement of Milestone’s smaller contribution at the commission meeting on Thursday, August 26.
After some discussion, the commissioners decided to cut back the number of hot dogs to be served from 1,000 to 700 to make up the shortfall.
Other business
Commissioners decided to advertise for an Information Technology Director to fill the open position formerly held by Aaron Robertson.
Robert Mann, a senior at Berkeley Springs High School, told the commissioners that he had been accepted to the National Youth Congressional Leadership Conference in Washington. He asked for help with his expenses.
The commissioners voted to give Mann $100 toward the conference.
The commissioners decided to allow the Boy Scouts to use the lot behind the courthouse for fundraising during the Apple Butter festival. The lot is scheduled to be paved in September.
The commissioners agreed to place a defibrillator supplied by the hospital in the lobby of the courthouse where it is easily accessible in an emergency.
They decided to sell insulation removed from the old Magistrate Court building during remodeling. There are 162 pieces of 2x4x6 R19 insulation available.
The commissioners reported they have received complaints from citizens that bailiffs and police vehicles are monopolizing the parking spaces near the courthouse on Fairfax Street, preventing easy access to the building for elderly and disabled people.
