BSHS Cross Country Team wins Musselman Invitational

Berkeley Springs High School Girls Cross Country Team edged Hedgesville, 39-40, for the team title at the Musselman Invitational on Saturday, August 28, at Poor House Farms. The Indians had a strong team effort with five runners finishing in the top 12 spots overall.

Sarah Younker led the Indian quintet with a third place finish. Macy Houck was fifth, Kayla Mundey finished eighth, Lacee Fulton 11th and Chelsea Hessler 12th.

Martinsburg placed third with 64 points and Musselman fourth with 75.
Heather Jenkins from Musselman was the individual champion.

"I know you hear this all of the time, but this really was a total team effort," said Berkeley Springs veteran Coach John Rowland. “We were tied with Hedgesville with each team’s top four runners in and it was Hessler's 12th place finish that sealed it for us. The number five runner is very important in cross country. In fact, they will win or lose a lot of meets for you. It was a very encouraging start."

The boys team finished fourth in the five-team boys field, won by Landon School with 33 points. Musselman was second with 44, followed by Hedgesville 75, Berkeley Springs 108 and Martinsburg 111.

Corey Shetler led the Indians with a sixth place finish. Casey Doxzen placed 13th, Zac Simmons was 27th and Kirk Spielman 29th.

"We had three sophomores and freshman in the lineup today," Rowland said. “We are in a rebuilding process, but our kids are really working hard."
This week the Indians travel to Cabell-Midland High School for the GEICO Tournament. It is an opportunity for Berkeley Springs to run against teams from across the state on the course where the state meet will be held.

"We wanted to get some stiff competition before we went to GEICO and I think we got that," said Rowland. “This week is a dress rehearsal for the state tournament. We run on the state meet course and will run on the same schedule that we will see at the state tournament. It is a good opportunity and we are looking forward to it."
