Indians shutout Keyser, 2-0
The Berkeley Springs High School Boys Soccer Team improved its record to 2-1, with a 2-0 shutout of Keyser on Saturday, August 28, in Keyser.
Berkeley jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when defender Jake Truax sent a long pass to Zach Wise who chipped it over the goalkeeper’s out stretched arms in the fifth minute of play.
The Indians forced most of the action, but were unable to score another goal in the opening 40 minutes and led 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
“A lot of opportunities to score were lost, so we’ll be working on that, but overall our game plan was well executed," said Berkeley Springs Coach Jamie Chenoweth.
The game remained tight until the Indians scored the games final goal in the 51st minute of play.
Senior captain Gudiel Guzman gave Berkeley Springs the cushion when he scored on an assist from Zane Mokhiber.
Berkeley Springs defense, led by Tyler Lineburg, Nathan Quarantillo, Jake Truax, Quentin Godman, team captain Mokhiber and goalie Caleb Murray did the rest, and the Indians defeated their regional rival, 2-0.
Murray picked up the shutout, stopping eight shots on goal.
“We looked like a team today," Chenoweth said. "On attack we looked dangerous, on defense we were solid. We kept possession and created a lot of chances. We anticipated Keyser’s attacks and we shut them down."
Earlier in the week, August 25, Berkeley Springs traveled to Charles Town for a game against Washington High School.
The Patriots scored five goals in the first half and one more in the second half for a 6-0 shutout of the Tribe.
Daniel Harper got things going in the 11th minute for Washington, but it was senior forward Tanner Robinson that did most of the damage, scoring four of the Patriots six goals.
“Washington was an excellent learning experience for our team," said Chenoweth. "They’re very fast, and we learned some hard lessons. We could hardly recover from one attack before the next was on us, and we never really found our rhythm. Although we took our lumps, we’re a better team for playing them and I expect we’ll be prepared next time we meet.”
Caleb Murray stopped 12 shots on goal.
The Indians will host Frankfort on September 2, and Musselman on September 7. Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m.
Indians add JV squad
The turnout for boys soccer was so good this year that Berkeley Springs was able to add a junior varsity team, which is welcome news to Coach Chenoweth.
“A JV team is huge for our program. It means that the younger or more inexperienced players can develop their skills," said a happy Chenoweth. “With interest in soccer continuing to grow locally, and the abilities of the kids coming in from the Rec league improving each year, I anticipate future teams will continue to be competitive at all levels.”
Chenoweth went on to say, “I’m a very lucky coach to have such a good group of kids. I’ve got more talent than I know what to do with. I’ll have kids on my bench that would be captains on other teams. Not only do they have skills, but they’re good students who challenge themselves in school and are involved in the community.”
