School attendance policy has changed

Beginning August 23, the total number of unexcused student absences for the school year that will start attendance enforcement is decreasing from 10 to five.

The policy change is due to West Virginia Legislature House Bill 4593, which amended state code regarding compulsory school attendance. It became effective July 1.

If a child has five unexcused absences, the parent, guardian or custodial parent will be served written notice requiring them to meet with school officials along with the child to discuss and correct the cause of the child’s unexcused absences. They must do so within 10 days of receiving the notice.

If the parent, guardian or custodial parent doesn’t comply, the Attendance Director will file a complaint with a magistrate.

If parents or guardians receive a letter from the Attendance Director or notice of registered mail, they need to get the letter and do what it asks, said Morgan County Schools Attendance Director Linda McGraw.

Parents also should ensure that their child delivers a written excuse explaining why they missed school or their absence will be considered unexcused.

State Code cites school absences and truancy as factors that could lead to students dropping out of school. Early intervention after a few absences is key.
