For a safe Morgan County

Dear Editor:

Why are we still having this debate over courthouse security? It should be a no brainer. There really should be no questions about this. Fifty-four other counties in the State of West Virginia have taken care of this with none of the petty bickering that Morgan County has done.

Sammy Swaim asked Commissioner Tommy Swaim if anyone ever pulled a gun on him in the courthouse, and of course the answer was no. No one ever brought these types of weapons to Columbine High School until it happened, and no one ever brought a gun into the classrooms of Virginia Tech before, until it happened.

Having everyone go through security will keep Morgan County off of the list of disasters like that, or do the commissioners like the thought of looking down the barrel of a gun? If everyone is not going to go through a security check, then that could happen.

Steve Hutchinson asked if background checks were done on all people getting security cards, and that answer is yes, when they were hired. It was also brought up what would happen if a security card was lost. That is real easy. The person in charge of that simply goes in and deletes the access that the card in question has.

The county commissioners are the guardians of the counties trust. They are supposed to rise above all this and do what is good for the county and its citizens. I am not impressed with their track record so far.
