George R. Long

1924-2010

George Raymond Long, 85, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at his residence while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born July 30, 1924 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late George Frederick and Theresa Sara Samson Long.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Army Air Transport Command.

He retired as a Washington, D.C. Police Officer in 1974.

He was a member of the Alderton Dawson American Legion Post #60 and the Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019.

He is survived by two daughters, Karin Bergeron, Westport, Mass. and Bobbi Jo Starry, Berkeley Springs; two sons, George Frederick Long II, Grants Pass, Ore. and David Raymond Long, Keyser and five grandchildren, George Raymond Long II, Ryan Dennis Bergeron, Samantha Fay Starry, Brandon Ray Starry and Hugo Alberto Perez II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Anita Spring Long in 2002 and one brother, Frederick Granville Long.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with David Raymond Long officiating. Interment with military graveside rites by Tri-State Honor Guard will be at Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Great Cacapon.
