“Woodmont Socials” a success for garden club
The ladies of the Foxglove Garden Club held two socials at the Woodmont Lodge on Sidling Hill Saturday, June 19.
More than 200 people attended one of the two socials, the first held from 1-3 p.m. and the second from 4-6 p.m.
“There was such a demand for tickets we had to have two sessions. All the proceeds are going to be used for Town of Bath projects,” said Betty Lou Harmison.
The Foxglove Garden Club beautifies the Town of Bath by planting and taking care of gardens on the War Memorial Square and at the entrance to Berkeley Springs State Park, at the train depot and at several cemeteries and other locations around town.
“The club consists of 30 ladies and they have been working on this for months,” Beth Curtin said.
The Hancock Arts Council Band, featuring Hancock Mayor Dan Murphy, Councilman Sinclair Hamilton, and Mike and Carolyn Kligerman, played a variety of chamber music, folk songs and even a pop tune or two.
Harmison said the band gave both their time and musical skills to help liven up the event.
A silent auction was held at each social, auctioning off a wide assortment of items donated by area businesses.
Harmison said the garden club holds two fundraisers a year and sells a cookbook titled “Foxy Ladies in the Kitchen and Garden” to raise money for club projects.
Woodmont
The Woodmont Lodge has been host to six U.S. Presidents; James A. Garfield, Chester Arthur, William Henry Harrison, Grover Cleveland, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Starting as a rod and gun club formed in 1870, the first club house was built in 1872. The current large stone building was completed in 1930.
Today the property is owned and maintained by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The park is only open to the public twice a year when the Maryland Park Service holds open houses.
