Just a coincidence

Dear Editor:

I read in the May 26 edition of the Morgan Messenger that the Morgan County Commissioners had given the Morgan County Health Dept. $10,000 less this year than they gave them last year.

It’s probably just a coincidence that this is the same amount of money that the commissioners decided to set aside to pay an attorney to study the new zoning plan and give recommendations on its legal merits.

I hope the county is not taking money away from an agency as important as the Health Department to help pay for the zoning plan.

We all realize that zoning is going to be an expensive proposition.

At the May 27 land use meeting, one of the members of the planning commission said “Zoning by definition is almost a magnet for litigation.” I agree with him, and litigation means expense to taxpayers.

If we end up with zoning, we need to try to find some place to get the money other than the Health Department. I hope they will be able to restore this money to them at a later time.
