First duty is to protect
Dear Editor:
I have been against the spending for the Taj Mahal Courthouse from the very beginning. I was told by the county commissioners that it would meet all our needs for the next 100 years.
“If the building is for the next 100 years, why not the security?” This was my question at the county commission meeting. Not some long ago quote, but a serious question.
The belief that security would take away rights is misguiding. The belief that people won’t be comfortable coming to pay their taxes is quite odd. Why would the show of security deter the citizens of our county? The majority of our citizens are good morally based people. They will have no problem with the new security.
Alas, I know the Taj Mahal is there and I must tolerate the vastness of it. I am pleased the county commissioners voted to keep it secure. The sheriff and his deputies are doing a great job in Morgan County. I feel we should let them do what we pay them to do.
“Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives,” Ronald Reagan said, and it is my personal favorite quote.
I am glad Commissioners Swaim and Dugan voted to make sure county employees are protected. Now, if we can get all three commissioners to stop trying to run our lives, I would be a happy Morgan Countian.
