Club plans social at historic Woodmont
The historic sportsmen’s Club, Woodmont, is the setting for the Foxglove Garden Club’s Summer Social on Saturday, June 19.
Woodmont was founded in 1870 as a rod and gun club. The present three-story stone building was completed in 1930.
Six U.S. Presidents have been guests of Woodmont with its view of the Potomac River and thousands of acres of forest, wildlife and native plants.
Tickets for the garden club’s tea tour and silent auction are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Fairfax Street, Berkeley Springs; phone 304-258-3738.
Tickets may be purchased for the 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. event or the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. event. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used for the Foxglove Garden Club’s Town of Bath beautification projects, specifically
seasonal plants for the town garden maintained by club members for the past 34 years.
Woodmont is opened to the public only twice each year.
Presidents who visited Woodmont were James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Today the Department of Natural Resources owns the grounds. The property is managed by the Woodmont chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, which has the rights to the grounds for part of each year.
Of the 3,400-acre wildlife management area, 1,400 acres and the lodge have restricted use throughout most of the year.
The Woodmont Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and Fort Frederick State Park jointly manage the lodge and property, which is located west of Hancock, near the Western Maryland Rail Trail and the C&O Canal National Historical Park.
