Indian baseball team searching for consistency
Berkeley Springs High School only played one of four scheduled baseball games last week, losing to East Hardy, on the road, 18-13.
"We need to get more consistent," said Berkeley Springs Coach Trey Barcus. “But, that is kind of tough, when you don't get to play as often as you would like. We have had several games postponed in the past two weeks and that hasn't helped the cause."
The Indians saw a 9-3, third inning, lead evaporate, but scored three times in the fifth to go on top 12-9. East Hardy then outscored the Indians 9-1 over the remainder of the contest, for the five-run win.
"Our pitching was terrible," said Barcus “We committed four errors, but they really didn't hurt us that much. But, when you walk 15 batters, it is tough to win. We allowed 29 base runners in this game and that is unacceptable. Our pitching had been pretty good, but not against East Hardy."
On a positive note, Barcus is pleased with the way his team is hitting the ball.
"This is probably the best hitting team I've had at Berkeley Springs," said Barcus. “We don't have a lot of big bats – although we have hit a few home runs this year, but we do put the ball into play. The kids have been making good contact."
Berkeley out hit their Hardy County opponent 11 to 10, with Jared Spielman, Ben Griffith, Andrew Rickli and Lucas Redick each collecting two hits. TJ Lambert, Alex Lake and Dylan Spielman had the other three Indian hits.
Redick had four RBI, Rickli two, Lambert one and Dylan Spielman added one on a sacrifice fly.
The 5-6 Indians are scheduled to play St. Maria Goretti today, April 21, in Hagerstown, and will host Frankfort and Tucker County on April 23 and 24, respectively. Friday's game against Frankfort begins at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday's double-header against Tucker County begins at 1 p.m.쇓
