New tennis courts needed

Dear Editor:

Berkeley Springs High School Tennis is now in full swing.

Did you know all matches must be played away as we do not have courts to invite other teams here? We must have four courts and we presently have only two on Biser Street.

Did you know 33 students are out for the “No-Cut” program this year with 50% of them being first-time players?

Did you know that in 2009, our boys’ team became both Potomac Valley Conference Champions and Region II Class AA Champions? The same year four boys and one girl qualified to compete at the state tournament — with one boy advancing to the state semi-finals — a first in the program’s five-year history at that time.

Did you know the Morgan County Board of Education has allotted ground for the purpose of constructing courts for all of the Morgan County Community to use?

Morgan County Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Morgan County Tennis Association, will be responsible for raising the money to construct courts near Widmyer School.

A local fund-raising campaign will begin soon, with letters to local businesses, requesting any financial or ‘in-kind’ support they can provide. If you, as a business or individual, are interested in helping to provide the community with new courts, we would appreciate any consideration — large or small. Everything helps.

Mark “New Tennis Court” on the memo line of your check and mail it to: Morgan County Parks & Recreation, 26 Chapman Street, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
