Herbert A. Young
1928-2007
Herbert Alfred Young, 79, of Hancock, died Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Winchester, Va. Medical Center.
Born February 16, 1928, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was a the son of the late Clyde D. and Sydney Mason Young.
He had a 52-year music career. He was a band director for 40 years, teaching at Shepherdstown, W.Va. High School 1950-1959, Martinsburg South Junior High and High School 1959-1965, Hancock Elementary School and Hancock Junior/Senior High 1965-1990.
He was a choir director for 49 years, serving Winchester Avenue Christian Church, First Baptist Church and Westview Baptist Church, all in Martinsburg and for three years at Hancock Presbyterian Church in Hancock.
He served four years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in New Berry Berks, England.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sara Jane Taylor Young, Hancock; one brother, Bruce L. Young, Martinsburg; one sister, E. Lorraine Puffenbarger, Falling Waters, W.Va.; three sons, Herbert Alfred Young, II, Ormond Beach, Fla., John Michael Young, Davie, Fla. and David Taylor Young, Hancock; four daughters, Beverly Susan True, Warfordsburg, Pa., Sara Jean Wagner, Hancock, Mary Vivian Hornbaker and Gloria Jane Young, both of Berkeley Springs; eight grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Max E. Young of California.
Funeral services were Sunday, November 11 at Westview Baptist Church with Pastor Johnny Kelly officiating. Military graveside services were held at Rosedale Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
