Jess W. Combs

1936-2007

Jess Willard Combs, 71, of Berkeley Springs, formerly of Lexington, N.C., died Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born May 19, 1936 in Pittsboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Conley Edgar and Hattie Jane Holbrook Combs.

He was a member of Faith Bible Church in Hedgesville. He attended public schools in North Carolina. He was a mechanic and last worked with Christopher Construction in Rock Hill, S.C. He liked flea markets.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Doris Virginia Beverley Combs, at home; two sons, Tony Jess Combs, Green Spring and Jeffrey Willard Combs, Berkeley Springs; four daughters, Betty Darlene Whitt, Denton, N.C., Judy Angela Combs, Berkeley Springs, Lisa Dawn Lemmon, Martinsburg and Denise Beverly Fredman, Cross Junction, Va.; two sisters, Dessie Tysinger and Emma Tysinger, both of Lexington; one brother, Fonzo Combs, Apex, N.C.; six grandchildren, Darla Leonard, Reeds, N.C., Crissy Loflin, Denton, Tina Bevans and T.J. Combs, both of Charlotte, N.C., Brandon Semonco, Berkeley Springs and Evan Fredman, Cross Junction; five great grandchildren and 39 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Lessie Moody, Tessie Moody, Effie Holbrook, Eddie Combs and two brothers, Clellan Ray Combs and Cluie Combs.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 11 at the Peoples Assembly of God, Great Cacapon, with Pastor Andrew J. Hamrick officiating. Interment was in Great Cacapon Cemetery.

The Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, handled the arrangements.
