Redistricting is dropped from commission agenda

The move to redistrict the county magisterial districts has been dropped from the Morgan County Commission agenda.

Commissioner Tommy Swaim said that the issue was too complicated and he wasn't going to bring it up again. Swaim said that he still represented his original district, District 3, for the remainder of his term.

Commissioner Glen Stotler is up for reelection next year and represents Magisterial District 2, where Swaim now lives. Nothing would happen when the next election came around and Stotler could still run, said Swaim.

The commission had discussed changing the district lines earlier this year following Swaim's inadvertent move to District 2 when he built a new home.

Prosecuting Attorney Debra McLaughlin's legal opinion on the situation stated that Swaim represented the district in which he lived at the time of his election. Her ruling was based on a state Supreme Court ruling on a Berkeley County case.
