Historical and Genealogical Society meets and plans

The Morgan County Historical and Genealogical Society met Monday, May 14 at the First United Methodist Church.

President Fred Widmyer reported on his meeting with Larry Lower of the Fair Committee, Betty Harmison of the Landmark Committee, along with Bob Knight and Tammy Marggraf of the History Museum of Berkeley Springs, concerning how the different historical bodies of Morgan County could better work together to come to a more satisfactory result in obtaining history of the county, as well as, making it available to those wanting to do research on the different historical subjects of Morgan County.

At the April meeting, it was decided to change the meeting day, on a trial basis, to the second Monday. This was not satisfactory to several members who had been very active and so at the May meeting it was decided to change it once more, with the meeting day now being the second Tuesday. The meeting time was changed also. The board will meet at 1 p.m. and the regular meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. The meetings will be held in the social hall of the First United Methodist Church on Green Street.

The MCHGS is still in need of more volunteers to man the Morgan Room located in the Morgan County Library. The room will be open Monday through Thursday and Saturday morning, staffed by volunteers and the room will be open Fridays by appointment only. The hours will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. On Wednesday and Saturday, the Morgan Room will be open 9-12, due to the library closing at noon on those two days.

Volunteers will man the booth once again at the Morgan County Fair August 4 and 5. There will be more discussion on this matter at a later date.

Rick Unger gave a detailed report on the working and findings of the Cemetery Committee. Each member has been assigned a cemetery and they are working to locate and document each grave in each and every cemetery in Morgan County. This is a tremendous job and the committee can use help whenever they start documenting Greenway Cemetery, it being so scattered and large.

The membership year is January through December. To become a new member or pay dues for 2007, send remittance to MCHGS, P.O. Box 52, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
