Warren T. Cowles, Sr.
1932-2007
Warren Tribble "Tic" Cowles, Sr., 74, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Born October 26, 1932 in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of the late Fred Tribble Cowles and Angie Lucille Glass Cowles Crawford.
He was of the Protestant faith. He attended the Miller School and Lane High School in Charlottesville, Va. He was a brick mason and homebuilder who was the founder of Cowles & Sons Construction, Inc.
He served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army from March 24, 1953 until his honorable discharge on March 23, 1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
He was a member of the Virginia Bowhunters Association, The Golden Feather and was a skilled craftsman in bow making. His archery championships included 1967-1968 Virginia Champion, 1970 Mid-Atlantic Champion, 1969 World Champion and was a member of the 1970 U.S. Olympic Team where he defended his title.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet Inez Marie Sprinkle Cowles, at home; five daughters, Donna Lee Shetley, Linden, Va., Diane Lynn Rivenburg, Locust Grove, Va., Wanda Jean Moffett, Demorest, Ga., Anna Marie Cowles and Tina Louise Busbani, both of Berkeley Springs; five sons, Warren Tribble Cowles, Jr., Mark Lane Cowles, Daryl Edward Cowles, Derrick Eugene Cowles and Justin Jay Cowles, all of Berkeley Springs; his step-father, Robert Edward Crawford, Aroda, Va.; one sister, Norma Lucille Dennison, Charlottesville, Va; two brothers, Chuck Hummill, Gordonsville, Va. and John Hummill, Orange, Va.; 16 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Dupree Cowles.
Graveside services were conducted Monday, March 26, at Greenwood Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Ken Smith officiating.
The Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, handled the arrangements.
