G. Leroy Dick

1932-2007

G. Leroy Dick, 75, of Gross Junction, Va., died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at VA Medical Center in Martinsburg.

He was born January 31, 1932 in Cross Junction, a son of the late Mervil and Icie Leith Dick.

He was a carrier for the Winchester Star for 14 years, and a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #824 in Winchester, Va. and the American Legion Post #137 in Capon Bridge.

Surviving is one sister Kathleen E. Omps, Cross Junction.

A funeral service was held at the Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge, on Sunday, February 18. Officiating was Rev. Gregory R. Kenney. Interment was in Timber Ridge Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Cross Junction.



Mildred C. Golden

1926-2007

Mildred Clara "Midge" Golden, 80, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at her sister's home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born July 24, 1926 in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Mary Ellen Biser Braithwaite.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She attended the Annex School in Berkeley Springs and worked at the Interwoven Hosiery Mill in Berkeley Springs. For many years, she worked at Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 in Berkeley Springs. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a hairdresser, operating out of her home.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, George Crist Golden, Berkeley Springs; one son, Dale Andrew Golden, Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Barney and Phyllis Irene Melzer, both of Berkeley Springs; two grandchildren, Kevin Andrew Golden, Hedgesville and Kristie Michelle Friend, Greencastle, Pa.; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Mae Oden and Pearl Ellen Corbin and four brothers, George Edward Braithwaite, Robert James Braithwaite, Herbert Loyer Braithwaite and Charles Edward Braithwaite, Jr.

A memorial service was held with Pastor Rodney C. Truax officiating Sunday, February 18 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home. Interment private.

Arline C. Shaw

1912-2007

Arline Catherine Shaw, 94, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, February 19, 2007 at her home.

Born May 20, 1912 in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Milton U. and Blanche Widmyer Michael.

She was an active member of Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church serving on the Board of Deacons and as church elder. She was a graduate of Bath District High School. She had a long business career, starting in the 1930s with the M.U. Michael Tomato Canning Company operating three canneries in Morgan County where she served as fiscal clerk. Next, she worked with the Interwoven Hosiery Mill in Berkeley Springs and finished her career with the Hancock Bank, serving as a teller for 14 years.

She is survived by one nephew; one great niece and two great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Mark Hill, her second husband, Harold Shaw, one brother, Paul Gladstone Michael and one sister, Elsie Virginia Bageant.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 23 at Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church, 97 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Bob Osborne officiating. Interment will be at Greenway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the Helsley Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs.

James E. Orr Sr.

James E. Orr Sr. of Martinsburg, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Bethel Swain Orr.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda June Henry Orr; and one sister, Janice I. Ryan of Williamsport.

Graveside services will be private.
