Many contributed to teacher winning award

Having just returned from a conference celebrating the 2007 state teachers of the year, it has become apparent to me what an honor this award actually is. It is humbling and energizing to be a part of such a group of education professionals. However, hearing the experiences of the representatives from other states, I am positive that my success is directly attributable to my students, my school, my county and my community.

In the short time I have lived in Morgan County, I have been allowed to teach and learn in ways that truly work for my students and for me. I have been given opportunities to create new curricula and to employ inventive teaching. I have received the administrative support of dedicated professionals and the collegial support of my peers. I have been admired and challenged by some of the best students in the state and I have been engaged in productive work with caring parents.

From the beginning, the people and businesses in the town where I live have welcomed me. Because of this support, I have been able to excel leagues beyond what I believed was possible.

Now, I find myself very much in the spotlight, but I am not here alone. I fully recognize that I am where I am because of the community that made me. I owe so many different people: students, parents, teachers, principals, board office staff, board members, friends and family. Other people have made a difference in other ways: the bus driver who stopped my car to tell me he was proud of me, the local press who have presented such eloquent and kind news coverage, neighborhood restaurateurs who have cheered for me (and surprised me with free desserts), state and county businesses who have offered all different kinds of support, and all others who have made me feel at home in Berkeley Springs.

As I continue to stand for West Virginian teachers in state and national settings, I cannot forget my background, and I hope I represent fully the extraordinary people and the innovative schools here in Morgan County.
