Study the options

The Morgan County Commissioners are playing it right by not being pushed into giving away the trailers now being used for temporary county offices.
From the start, there have been two lines of thought about the future of the modular units after the new courthouse is open. They can either be sold to put a little money back in the county treasury or they can be used by other public entities.
We agree with the idea that a trailer should be given to Morgan County Schools since the school system has generously donated space and utilities for circuit court trials and the prosecutor’s office since the 2006 courthouse fire. Giving a trailer to the school board amounts to a direct payback to taxpayers, who would have to pay for a modular classroom otherwise.
As for the other units, selling some of them seems like a good idea to us. Commissioner Stacy Dugan has suggested auctioning them through a surplus government property website. If they take this path, we trust they will make the details of the sale known to local citizens, who may want to bid.
We’re sure the commissioners will carefully sift through the requests for the trailers and the alternatives, with an eye toward what is best for the largest number of people.
