Hardcourt victory for Lady Indians
Berkeley Springs High School Girls Tennis Team improved to 4-8 on the year by defeating Hedgesville, 4-3, on Tuesday, April 20, in Hedgesville.
Jenny Burdock, Ashley Mason and Carrie Boone won individual matches, with Burdock and Mason joining forces to win in doubles.
Burdock (#1 singles) beat Margaret Bock, 8-4, Mason (#2 singles) downed Lexi Doepp, 8-2, and Boone defeated Kelly Rudy, 8-5, in the #4 singles match. Burdock and Mason scored the deciding point, with an 8-1 win over Bock and Doepp in the #1 doubles match.
"This was a good day for the girls and should give them some confidence moving forward," said Berkeley Springs Coach Rick Burdock.
The boys lost 5-2, but showed some improvement, according to Burdock.
"The boys were competitive and that is pretty good against an AAA school," Burdock said. “They are improving and learning how to play the game."
The Indians two points came in the #2 and #3 doubles matches.
Dylan Walsh and Dustin Tholl combined in the #2 doubles match to beat Sean Pike and Wesley Phelps, 8-4, while Quentin Godman and Brian Close bettered Anthony King and Austin Arnold, 9-7, in the #3 doubles match.
"We only scored two points," said Burdock. “But we were competitive in other matches. Josh Fox and Dakota Maravelis lost the #1 doubles match 8-4, while Maravelis and Dylan Walsh lost the #2 and #3 singles matches, 8-5."
On Saturday, April 24, both the girls and boys team played in the Apple Valley League Championships.
The girls, playing in Jefferson County, had a pretty good day, with Ashley Mason finishing second at #2 singles.
Mason won her quarterfinal match, 8-0, over Hedgesville's Julie Bohrer, then downed Beck Staf from Musselman, 8-4, in the semifinals. Mason battled hard in the final, but lost, 8-4, to Alaina Heck, from Martinsburg.
Kelsey Weimer won her first match at #3 singles, 8-4, over Lila Eid from St. Maria Goretti, before losing in the semifinals to Molly Queen from Martinsburg, 8-1. The #1 doubles team of Burdock and Mason also won their opening match. The pair defeated Bohrer and Bock from Hedgesville, 8-5, but lost to Kay Raines and Taryn Burkhart from Musselman, 9-7, in the semifinals.
"Ashley really had a good day," said Burdock. “She had to play a total of five matches and acquitted herself nicely."
Mason improved to 12-5 in singles competition and is 8-6 in doubles, where she has been teamed with Burdock.
"We competed well against some good competition and think that it bodes well for regionals," said Coach Burdock. “Hopefully the kids are peaking at the right time of year."
The boys match, at St. James Academy, was suspended because of rain.
The Indians will play tomorrow, April 29, at Musselman.
