Glad not to be in the path of PATH

You've probably noticed that even though Morgan County is no longer part of the route for the PATH electric transmission line, the debate over the massive power project continues throughout the region.

Currently a series of public hearings are being held in affected areas across the Mountain State. And, every business-oriented publication seems to be promoting the power line, often through Allegheny Power spokesmen.

So, it's interesting to note a new kink that has arisen in Maryland, where the 280-mile power line would end near Frederick. The Maryland Public Service Commission has rejected the PATH application because PATH is not an electric company. Over there, Potomac Edison applied "on behalf of PATH," which would actually be built by private developers.

Under Maryland law, the Public Service Commission can only give the go-ahead for projects to the company constructing the line. Since PATH is not actually a state-regulated utility, there may also be problems with condemning land for the project.

We're lucky that public opposition helped to remove Morgan County from the PATH picture a year ago.
