Law enforcement officers honored

B.P.O. Elks Lodge 778 honored Law Enforcement Officers from Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson County on February 10.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office selected Deputy 1st Class Luke A. Shambaugh as its Officer of the Year for 2012. DFC Shambaugh diligently reports for duty in a professional attire and takes his professionalism to the streets with him.

DFC Shambaugh also serves in the 167th Airlift Wing WVANG in Martinsburg, received Airman of the Year in 2010 and has served on different deployments.

For 2012 Shambaugh made over 300 contacts with drivers, conducted approximately 90 criminal investigations making nearly 90 arrests and answered around 500 calls for service.

Out of 1,700 law enforcement officers in West Virginia reporting at least one DUI, he was ranked 127th in the entire state, helping Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reach the ranking of 27th out of 256 agencies and WVSP detachments.

He is also a member of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.

The WV State Police of Morgan County selected Senior Trooper Samuel R. Smith as its Trooper of the Year for 2012. Trooper Smith is a Kentucky native. He joined the State Police in 2003. Trooper Smith has been stationed his entire career serving Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson counties.

Trooper Smith has been a training officer most of his career and likes helping new upcoming officers.
