Byrl D. Hampe, Sr.

Byrl Delmar Hampe, Sr., age 86, of Allenwood, Pa., formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 26, 2012.

Born June 19, 1926 in Oval, Pa., he was the son of the late Nathan M. and Cleta D. Hampe. He attended public school in Oval, Pa. He was of Lutheran faith.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II from June 17, 1942 until January 24, 1946. After basic training he was assigned to the USS Hornet CV-12 where he was a machinist mate 1st class and a tail gunner.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, The Loyal Order of the Moose and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet F. Mincemoyer of Watsontown, Pa. and Tari L. Hampe-Deneen of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sons, Charles W. “Chuck” Hampe of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and Byrl D. Hampe, Jr. of Livingston, Mont.; a sister, Janet Scarborough of Clearfield, Pa.; seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor “Ellie” Hampe, a brother, George V. Hampe, Sr., two sisters, Mary Heggenstaller and Catharine Wolfe and one grandson, Nathan C. Hampe.
He was an avid gardener, cook, hunter and fisherman. He welcomed his friends and family daily with his home cookin’.

Graveside services with full military honors were held at the Oval Cemetery on Sunday, December 30, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ryan Krauss officiating.

Friends and family were received at the Bower-Decker American Legion, Post 251, Montgomery, Pa., following the service.
