Cross country sends three to states
by Jamie Harris
The cross country runners for Berkeley Springs have been training all season in preparation for the regional championships and the chance to qualify for the West Virginia A/AA state championships.
With high expectations of sending both teams back to the state championships, both the boys and girls teams found this season to be a more stiff competition in the regionals.
On the boys side Corey Shetler (ninth place, 18:48) and Zac Simmons (10th place, 18:51) both qualified.
The Indians missed qualifying the team by three points as PVC rival Keyser took fourth place with 51 points, while Berkeley Springs finished with 48. Frankfort took the top team honors, while Phillip Barbour finished as the runner-up.
Over on the girls side, sophomore Kinsey Reed finished in eighth place with a time of 22:45 to earn a state trip.
The Lady Indians finished in fourth place with 51 points, and missing out on third place by three points. Phillip Barbour took top honors while Frankfort (second) and Bridgeport (third) rounded out the top teams.
Shetler, Simmons, and Reed will be competing at the state championships on October 27 at Cabell Midland.
