John P. Murray

John Paul “Jack” Murray, 85, died Thursday, October 4, 2012 in Catonsville, Md. formerly of Hancock.

Born July 11, 1927, he was the son of Lawrence Andrew and Elva Wachter Gleatha Stotler Murray.

He was a veteran of World War II, and served in Panama.

He was a member, and past president of the Hancock Rotary Club; a Paul Harris Fellow and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He served on the zoning committee for the Town of Hancock and was a C&O Canal volunteer.

He retired from U.S. Silica. He liked to cycle and hike.

He is survived by one daughter, Pamela Chilcoat; three granddaughters, Zena, Joanna and Mary Chilcoat; three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zena Murray, two brothers, Leo and Richard Murray; three half-sisters, Naomi “Sis” Wachter Bishop, Hazel B. Wachter Faith and Adelaide M. Wachter Jones and two half-brothers, Willard Reed “Bud” Wachter and Charles Wachter.

The funeral service was held at the Grove Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 9. Burial was at the Cedar Lawn Me-morial Park, in Hagerstown, where military graveside services were conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
