James A. Unger

James Alfred Unger, age 82, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at his residence while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born April 14, 1930 in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Calvin and Martha Bishop Unger.

He was a licensed residential and commercial contractor for over 50 years. He was the owner of Unger and Associates Construction and owner of Cold Run Driving Range. He volunteered his time to build the local Berkeley Springs High School concession stand and several churches. Jim taught masonry classes at James Rumsey Vocational Technical Institute. He was generous to his family and friends. He loved music and playing one of his many guitars.

Jim is survived by his long time companion, Diane Truax at home; four sons, Steven Unger, Murrells Inlet, S.C., Greg Unger, Harold Unger and Bryan Unger, all of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Carolyn Pittman, Berkeley Springs and Amber Ritchie, Stephens City, Va.; three brothers, Lawrence Unger, Warfordsburg, Pa., Joe Unger, Winchester, Va. and Bill Unger, Capon Bridge, W.Va.; seven sisters, Margaret Whitacre, Clear Spring, Md., Mary Unger, Cumberland, Md., Ann Riggleman, Berkeley Springs, Frances McAlee, Titusville, Fla., Ellie Reynolds, Vero Beach, Fla., Becky Palmer, Gerrardstown, W.Va. and Millie McKinley, Hancock; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester Unger, Lloyd Unger, David Unger and Wesley Unger and five sisters, Evalene Madison, Nancy Golliday, Louise Jennings, Betty McCoy and Naomi Stewart.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 15 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Roger Palmer and Rev. David Unger officiating. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Family received friends on Friday, September 14 at the funeral home.
