Basketball update

West Virginia's new basketball coach, Bob Huggins, has wasted little time living up to his reputation as a great recruiter. When he arrived at WVU in April there was little time to recruit high school seniors. That fact didn't matter much since WVU had just one scholarship available for Huggins to use.

Two weeks ago I began unveiling my preseason Division 1 college football top 10, beginning with the number 10 team in the poll, Wisconsin. In this week's article I will continue revealing the top 10 teams in ascending order with number nine, Louisville.

Allemong gets hole-in-one

Cacapon Men's Golf Association held their annual individual gross and net tournament on Sunday, June 10 at Cacapon State Park.

Troy Mezzatesta won the gross division with a fine score of even-par 72. Tim Smailes finished second with a 75 and Arley Lambert took third with a 76.

Argentine wins open

Oakmont Country Club did not play as hard as some had predicted, but when the dust settled, only Angel Cabrera was left standing with a total score of five over par, one shot better than Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. For the 37 year old from Argentina, the U.S. Open Championship was his first victory on United States soil. For Woods, it was another time he has failed to win a major event when starting the final day from behind.

Widmyer designated School of Excellence by state

The West Virginia Depart-ment of Education announced last month that 13 of the state's schools had been designated as Schools of Excellence for 21st Century Learning.

Widmyer Elementary was among the elite group of schools, and the only Eastern Panhandle school to make the list.

That was an ending?

So, I had stockpiled the final season of The Sopranos on my DVR. Late last week I decided to begin watching the final episodes of the HBO series so that when Sunday's final episode, "Made in America' aired, I would watch it live.

Belt second in long jump



Tone Belt nearly pulled off the long jump double, winning both the NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor titles. His jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Sacramento, Calif. of 25 feet 2.5 inches into a gusty headwind tied the mark of Cal State Northridge's Dashalle Andrews. However Andrews won the title by having the second longest measured jump of the two.

Imagine being a young football coach and hired to coach quarterbacks at West Virginia University. That is only part of the story regarding Rod Smith, the new quarterbacks coach at WVU.
