Morgan County School Board members presented several "Extra Miler" awards to those who have made a special impact on Paw Paw's students, including long-time school board member Margaret Zembower, at Paw Paw School on Tuesday, March 17.

Middle School selects students for December

Warm Springs Middle School announces its students of the month for December.

The sixth grade has selected Alec Kidwell and Keith Young. Kidwell is the son of Ron and Debra Kidwell. He is a student who is courteous, kind, honest and displays the type of work ethic all students should strive towards. He takes his time, completes all assignments and participates in class.

Summer institutes for teachers

"Now You See It!" International Sources and Resources for WV Classrooms is the topic for this year's 2009 Summer Institutes for Teachers, the 21st organized by the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty & Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS).

The virtually cost-free program will be held at Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center for five days, for the convenience of teachers: July 5-10.

Rockefeller praised for securing school funds

U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller met with State School Superintendent Dr. Steve Paine last week to discuss education funding for elementary and secondary schools in West Virginia.

"The economic recovery bill provides funding to modernize hundreds of West Virginia schools, improve education and help displaced workers learn new skills," said Rockefeller. "For years, I have worked to make sure West Virginia schools have the funds they need, particularly for school construction and repair."

Seven Morgan students at national competition

Seven Morgan County students participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition on Saturday, March 7 at Towson State University. There were nearly 400 participants from Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Morgan County did well! Chenaya Milbourne won for Junior/Senior High School Women Musical Theater and came in second for Junior Senior High School Women Classical Music. Patrick Slate won second place in Junior/Senior High School Men Classical Music and third place in the Junior/Senior High School Men Musical Theater.

Nine local students get distinguished state test scores

Each spring, Morgan County students in grades three through eight and high school sophomores take the WESTEST (West Virginia Educational Standards Test) to evaluate their mastery of academic subjects.

Test results are used by local teachers and administrators to judge their progress on federal education standards, known as No Child Left Behind. Local scores are also compared to other West Virginia school systems and reported to all parents.

Parents can register pre-K tots

Next week, parents of Morgan County's youngest scholars can register their children for next year's pre-Kindergarten classes.

All children who will be four years old by September 1 are eligible to register for pre-K classes on Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4 at a variety of locations.

Social Studies Fair at Intermediate School

Warm Springs Intermediate School held a Social Studies Fair on Tuesday, February 18. Each exhibit was unique and each student answered questions from the judges about their learning.

First and second place winners can advance to the county level competition.
