Local teen group recognized

The WV Zine Webpage, which is managed and maintained by Morgan County teens, was recognized as an effective community-based program after receiving a second place award for best program during the WV Alliance celebration event on April 4.

The WV Alliance funded 49 mini-grant projects throughout the state of West Virginia. The Morgan County Partnership received funding for this project in August 2008.

Energy Express receives school supplies

Morgan County Energy Express received an assortment of school supplies from Daughters of the American Revolution Ye Towne of Bath Chapter.

Energy Express is a six-week summer program promoting the school success of children living in rural and low-income communities across West Virginia where breakfast, lunch and learning don't take a summer break.

School budget hearing postponed

A scheduled Monday meeting of the Morgan County school board, which was to include a public hearing and possible adoption of the 2009-2010 school budget, was postponed due to local flooding.

Students earn buzz cut for school counselor

Students at the Warm Springs Intermediate School pounded the floor and cheered as their school counselor, Matthew Tolliver, had his head shaved by a fellow teacher at a school assembly last Wednesday, April 22.

Tolliver endured the buzz cut as a way to reward students for their fundraising efforts for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients campaign.

Scholarship for visually impaired students

The Tricounty Chapter of the Mountain State Council of the Blind is offering a $500 scholarship to students who are blind or visually impaired and reside in the Tri-County area of the state Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan. The student can be a full or part-time student.

This scholarship commemorates the memory of Cesarina "Mary" Capriotto Wysong, who died on December 3, 2008, following her courageous fight with cancer.

Free programs at James Rumsey

The Jill S. Weekley Learning Center at the James Rumsey Technical Institute offers a variety of free programs to students 16 years of age and older who are out of the public school system. All classes and programs are completely free of charge and are available during both day and evening hours. Some programs available are: GED preparation, Math Review, Grammar Review, Computer Tutorials, Basic Study Skills/Vocabulary and Essay Writing, LPN Preparation and more.

All students are required to attend an Orientation session prior to beginning Learning Center programs. Sessions include information and explanation of the center's programs class schedules, goal setting and testing and placement appointments.

Middle school students help celebrate Arbor Day



Warm Springs Middle School students planted a redbud tree in North Berkeley Community Park at noon April 17 to celebrate Arbor Day in Berkeley Springs.

Pleasant View School News

The Pleasant View PTO has finished its second fundraiser of the year. The profit from this fundraiser was $2,068. This will pay for transportation for spring field trips. The PTO is also working with the school on building a pavilion on the playground. Remember, Wolfgang candy can still be ordered.

Schools have resources to help troubled students

A story in last week's Morgan Messenger about an 8th grade student's attempt at suicide highlighted an issue that staff in Morgan County Schools have been facing for some time.

The school system recently added counselors and a full-time social worker in an effort to address the emotional needs of students.
