Man sentenced for firearm sale

A Paw Paw area man was recently sentenced in U. S. District Court in Martinsburg for illegal sale of a firearm.

Frank Simon, 62, was sentenced by U. S. District Judge John P. Bailey to 18 months in prison on July 30. After his prison time, Simon will be subject to two years of supervision.

Deputy will handle internet crimes against children

Sheriff's Deputy Tony Link will be the department's designated investigator of internet crimes against children. The Morgan County Sheriff's Department has recently become an affiliate member of the West Virginia-Northern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Link will be the contact person for any investigations of internet crimes against children, and will conduct classes about on-line safety for kids and parents.

Registered sex offenders under few restrictions

Registered sex offenders in West Virginia who have served their sentence and are not under supervision from parole or probation officers have no limitations on their movement.

When a convicted sex offender was arrested for public intoxication at a recent carnival, the question arose of whether a known sex offender is allowed to be at a location where there are many children.

Man sentenced for upping tips

A Berkeley Springs man was given a suspended prison sentence after pleading to forgery last week in Morgan County Circuit Court.

Jonathon L. T. Day, 25, of Jared Way, Great Cacapon, pled to three counts of changing the tip amounts on credit card receipts while working at a local restaurant last fall.

Man injured in cycle accident

A man was injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a deer Tuesday morning, August 7.

Gary Glenn Thompson, 56, of Cacapon Road, Great Cacapon, was riding a 2001 Harley Davison motorcycle at 5:30 a.m. on Cacapon Road. He had just passed Lindsay Lane when a deer ran out in front of him, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department,

Increaced number of home & car break-ins reported recently

Bath Police Chief James Minton is warning residents of Berkeley Springs and Morgan County about a series of car and home break-ins over the past several weeks.

Minton said residents should keep their doors and windows locked and their cars secure.

MAGISTRATE REPORT

Recent sentences by Magistrate Kermit Ambrose:

Daniel W. Allen, 25, of French Lane, Hedgesville, was sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay $1,186 fine & court costs for driving while his license was suspended (2nd offense). The jail time will be served concurrently with a Berkeley County sentence, and he was credited with time served.

MAGISTRATES REPORT

Recent sentences by Magistrate Greg Miller:

Allen P. Sacharov, 54, of East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, was given a suspended sentence of six months in jail for domestic battery. He was placed on a year's probation and must pay restitution of $4,462 and court costs of $186, plus surrender his firearms and attend counseling.
