County adopts a $75 annual ambulance fee

The Morgan County Commission enacted a Special Emergency Ambulance Service Fee ordinance at their Friday, June 15 meeting. The ordinance will impose a $75 annual ambulance fee for each household in Morgan County and will include both municipalities. The ambulance fee will become effective July 1.

The ambulance service fee will help fund mostly the Morgan County Rescue Service operations, but will also aid Paw Paw Fire and Rescue. The annual ambulance fee will be a separate bill that will be added to this year's property tax bills, which will go out in early July.

CNB Bank, Inc. April employee

Carolyn Clinger-man was selected as the April 2007 Employee of the Month for CNB Bank Inc. She has been employed at CNB since June 2004, and is currently the AVP/ branch manager/ mortgage loan officer at the Hancock office.

She was nominated by a fellow employee who stated, "Carolyn will go to a customer's home, if for health reasons; they cannot physically come to the bank. She is very community driven through Rotary, Chamber and the Hancock barge bash. Carolyn will do whatever it takes to help a customer or fellow employee. She treats customers like she wants to be treated, by taking her time and answering all questions. She is very thorough in her job."

Bath incumbents reelected; two tied

Mayor Susan Webster, Town Recorder Garnet Marsh and four Bath Town Council members won new two-year terms in the municipal election on Tuesday, June 12.

Webster beat write-in mayoral candidate Barbara Campbell by 108 to 55 votes, or 66% to 34%.

Seth Vancour joins RE/MAX Enterprises

RE/MAX Enterprises, LLC announces that Seth Vancour has joined their Hedgesville office as a sales associate.

He has spent the last five years in new home sales having worked for Dan Ryan Builders and Richmond American Homes. "His new home sales experience should serve him well in this market considering the number of these homes that will return to the market as re-sales in the coming years," remarked his broker, Charlotte Sherman.

Youngblood trial set for October

The retrial of Denver A. Youngblood, Jr. on sexual assault charges has been scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 23, in Morgan County Circuit Court.

Judge Gina Groh scheduled the new trial on Monday during a hearing at which Youngblood participated via teleconference from prison, where he is serving a sentence from an unrelated conviction.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Mid-Atlantic was honored for its outstanding performance during the last year to the 2007 Cartus Broker Network International Conference held April 15-18 at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. More than 900 representatives attended the four-day event, which included interactive workshops, round-table and panel discussions, and executive presentations.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage was awarded the Cartus Platinum Recognition Award, which recognizes the brokers who achieve a minimum of 19 of the total points available. Morgan Sanitation seeks 30% hike in garbage rates

Morgan Sanitation, Inc. is seeking a 30% increase in the garbage collection fees for Morgan County residents. The West Virginia Public Service Commission is currently considering the rate hike request.

The increase will cover increases in the company's operating costs, including salaries, insurance, equipment repairs and postage, said owner J.C. Fisher. The fee hike is not due to the rising costs of fuel, he said.

History of new Sleepy Creek EUB Church

at Sleepy Creek was laid Sunday, September 22, 1956, in a ceremony beginning at 2 p.m., featuring prominent officials of the EUB denomination in the area led by District Superintendent Floyd Fulk.

The new building replaced two churches on the EUB circuit, Pleasant Hill and Sleepy Creek, which have been meeting since June, 1955, after a fire on December 12, 1954, destroyed Pleasant Hill. In October, 1955, the two congregations approved a permanent merger and decided to build a new church on the land, given by the Virginia Conference of the EUB Church Board of Church Extension, adjoining the J.T. Laign place.

Commissioners get check for graveling lot

The Morgan County Commission received a donation of $1,600 from the Chamber of Commerce for graveling the new parking lot at the county courthouse site. The total bill for graveling the lot was $1608.15.

Chamber of Commerce President Chuck Wheeler and Chamber of Commerce Director Beth Curtin both expressed their appreciation to the commissioners creating the parking lot. Parking is a major problem in town and the lot has alleviated it somewhat, they said. Curtin said they understand that the parking lot is temporary.

MCOF Astronomy/Rocketry Summer Camp

Morgan County Observatory will be conducting a youth Astronomy and Rocketry summer camp this year for two separate weeks from August 6-10 and 13-17 for kids seven years old and up. the camp will meet at the observatory for a half day 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. session, with Friday evening viewing programs using observatory telescopes to include the kids, their families and guests.

Kids will learn about the history of rocketry from Robert Goddard to NASA's current programs while building and launching their own model rockets. Astronomical subjects such as constellations and their mythology, the sun and sunspots, the reason for the seasons, formation of the universe, telescope building, light and spectroscopy and much more will be presented with fun hands-on activities.
