Papers transferred for preservation

Secretary of State Betty Ireland has transfered many historic documents, dating to the first day of statehood (June 20, 1863) to the Division of Culture & History for proper storage and preservation. The documents were found in the Secretary of State's fire safe vault.

"We discovered many of West Virginia's birth papers," Ireland said. "We knew there were several records of state government in the vault, but little did we realize just how meaningful they would be to State's Archivist Fred Armstrong."

Riffle-Waugh wedding

Ashley Michelle Waugh and Rocky Neil Riffle, Jr. were united in marriage on June 2, 2007 at Cacapon State Park gazebo in Berkeley Springs, Pastor Steve Dawson performed the double ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mark Waugh and Susan Waugh, both of Berkeley Springs. She is the granddaughter of Gene and Phyllis Michael and Pauline Waugh, all of Berkeley Springs, and the late Glen Waugh.

Musician reunion

The Troubadour will be having a reunion on Sunday afternoon, June 24, of musicians who played with Jim McCoy.

All musicians are welcome to join in the jam session.

Board of Education updates foreign language standards

The West Virginia Board of Education has revised state policy to add 21st century foreign language content standards and objectives.

Policy 2520 defines what courses should contin for all programs of study. Policy 2520.7 addresses foreign languages. The revisions facilitate easier use by West Virginia teachers and incorporate higher levels of critical thinking and problem solving skills that students will need to be competitive in the 21st century.

American Legion Auxiliary takes part in flag burning

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 60, Berkeley Springs, participated in the ceremony of "disposing of unserviceable flags" on Saturday June 16, Sponsored by the American Legion Alderton-Dawson Post 60 Berkeley Springs, members of Post 60 Squadron 60, the Tri State Color Guard and Cub Scout Dylan McCusker representing Den 3, Pack 12 were also present. Debbie Fox, Erica Dods and Darlene Shives assisted in the ceremony.

At the May 10 meeting of Unit 60, Debbie Fox, unit president, introduced Gladis Nunn, a new member attending her first meeting. At the meeting the members endorsed the awarding of several scholarships to deserving graduating seniors of Berkeley Springs High School.

Free physicals

Free physicals for all Morgan County student athletes participating in high school or middle school sports during the 2007-2008 school year will be available Thursday, June 28.

Middle school athletes will be seen 4:30 - 6 p.m. at the high school gym. High school athletes will be seen 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the high school gym.
