Food school classes

Food school classes will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2 p.m. and Tuesday, June 3, 6 p.m. at the Morgan County Health Department.

If employed only for the summer months go to the Morgan County Health Department to take the temporary food test, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday except holidays.

Apple Blossom Festival

The 81st Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival will be held April 25 - May 4 in Winchester, Va.

Fantashia Barrino, American Idol winner, will be Grand Marshal of the festival. Dale Sayers, youngest inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will be Sports Marshal.

Welcome Home walk

A Welcome Home walk will be Saturday, May 3 at Cacapon State Park from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. This is a fundraiser to build the first Habitat home in Morgan County.

A community fundraiser The Welcome Home Walk will endeavor to raise funds to pay for property recently purchased in Berkeley Springs. Funds in excess to paying for the property will be used in constructing the first Habitat home in Morgan County. All funds raised by this event will remain in Morgan County.

Scoliosis screenings

Morgan County school nurses will be offering a scoliosis screening for sixth grade girls and eighth grade boys at Paw Paw High School April 3, and Warm Springs Middle School April 9. Parents must sign and return a permission slip for their child to participate in the screening.

Scoliosis is an abnormal side to side curvature of the spine that can result in an S or C shape. Most prevalent in girls, it usually begins between the ages of eight and 10. If left untreated, it can cause back pain and breathing difficulties in adulthood. Fortunately, with early detection and intervention, it can be monitored and corrected.

Free tax preparation

The AARP Foundation will provide free tax preparation for seniors, disabled veterans and others who normally aren't required to file in order to qualify for payment under the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008.

Tax preparation services will be available on a walk-in basis on Thursday, April 3 from noon until 6 p.m. and on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Morgan County Library in Berkeley Springs. No appointment is necessary.

Writers workshop at Ice House

Berkeley Springs High School girls softball team made too many errors in 2007. Many of those mistakes were of the mental variety. In fact, the Indians made 11 errors in the two games they dropped to Frankfort, by respective scores of 5-2 and 5-4 in the Region II, Section I championship, eliminating the Indians from the post-season. Therefore, girls softball Coach Greg Brown is focusing much of his attention in the preseason on making the right decisions, whether in the field or running the bases, being in the proper position to make the right plays and knowing where to go with the ball in any situation.

We've worked a lot on the mental part of the game, said Brown. What's the situation? Where am I going with it? Who's covering the base? Coach Sirbaugh (Fred) is always talking about how important that six inch playing field between the ears is. We explain to the girls that we realize everyone is going to drop a ball and everyone is going to strike out. It's part of the game. We can live with physical errors, but a mental error is unacceptable. Another thing we are doing is concentrating on technique and trying to quicken our reactions. Pictures are being accepted for the 2008 Morgan County Photo Contest, sponsored by The Morgan Messenger. The deadline for entries is Monday, April 21.

Area photographers, amateur or professional, may submit local scenes. Entries should be representative of the scenery, people, places and symbols of Morgan County, West Virginia.
