chool Superintendent David Temple will retire on June 30. Assistant Superintendent David Banks was sworn in as the new Morgan County school superintendent at the June 5 school board meeting. Banks begins his new position on July 1.

ATV problems are on the rise

ATV problems are on the rise across Morgan County. People are riding their ATVs where they shouldn't be and are not wearing the proper safety equipment, said Chief Deputy Vince Shambaugh of the Morgan County Sheriff's Department.

Shambaugh reminded residents that there is a county ATV ordinance. ATVs are not allowed on any county state-maintained roads, he said.

Paw Paw Festival is set for September 14-16

The Town of Paw Paw will hold a new Paw Paw Festival the weekend of September 14-16. The festival will be held in the Paw Paw Park and fields and the Paw Paw School fields area, said Mayor Julie Kidwell.

Activities will include an area fireman's parade and competition, a carnival, bingo, a regional beauty pageant for children and teens, entertainment, a fiddle competition, Sunday bluegrass gospel music, food, crafts and Saturday fireworks.

Bill Easton restores & shows antique cars



Antique car buff John William "Bill" Easton has always had a thing for old cars. In 1960, he'd had his eye on a 1933 Franklin Olympic that he had seen down in Washington, D.C. that year. Some soldiers had left it at a garage there and never came back for it. Easton knew the garage owners.

County may impose ambulance fee

The Morgan County Commission will hold a public hearing on Friday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m. to consider the adoption of a special emergency ambulance service fee. The fee would benefit both the Morgan County Rescue Service and Paw Paw Fire and Rescue.

The ambulance service fee discussed at the meeting was $85 for each household, but that amount could change. If approved, the annual ambulance fee would be a separate bill that would be added to this year's property tax bills, which will go out in early July.

Billboard ban extended until August 31

At their June 1 meeting, the Morgan County Commission unanimously voted to extend its ban on new off-premise billboards along the Washington Heritage Trail for three months. The ban will be in effect from June 1 until August 31.

The county's previous six-month ban on billboards along the trail expired May 31. The original six month ban on new off-premise billboards was enacted in May, 2006 and was extended in November, 2006.

Paw Paw hopes to build a rec center for youth

The Town of Paw Paw is planning to build a community wellness and recreation center for youth and adult activities. Plans are in the preliminary stages.

The building will include a multi-purpose room that could be used as both a gymnasium and social room, an exercise room, meeting rooms, a kitchen and restrooms, said Paw Paw Mayor Julie Kidwell. They may start with the gymnasium and locker rooms and build on to it, she said.

Town considers options for municipal building

At the June 1 Morgan County Commission meeting, the Town of Bath again expressed interest in having office space in the new Morgan County Courthouse. They also indicated that they were looking at other options.
