Work progresses on Paw Paw fire hall



Work continues on the new Paw Paw Fire Hall, which is being constructed beside the current fire hall. Workers were putting on the roof on Monday, said Fire Chief Steve Moreland of the Paw Paw Volunteer Fire Company.

Increased need seen at community agencies for emergency assistance

With rising food and gas prices, job layoffs and plant closings, more people are seeking emergency assistance with food and utility bills.

Bill Locke, treasurer of Morgan County InterFaith Emergency Care (MCIEC) and the MCEAT food pantry, said that some $28,000 of $42,000 donated from the community last year had gone to help 117 families who needed emergency assistance with their utility bills.

Adoption brought local couple a world of joy



Before Andrew and Kelly Cooney were married, they had talked about the possibility of adopting children. The couple adopted two little girls from China over the last several years, which was followed by the birth of a son.

County receives $600,000 grant for courthouse

The Morgan County Commission was awarded a $600,000 grant from the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority last week to help rebuild the county courthouse. The courthouse was destroyed in a fire on August 8, 2006.

Commissioner Glen Stotler said that the commission will receive $200,000 of the grant money up front for construction costs. They will then get $80,000 a year for five years starting in fiscal year 2009 to help pay off the debt service for their state loan for the courthouse, Stotler said.

Fatal fire explosions were most likely from tanks of oxygen

Explosions heard by firefighters at a Tuesday, April 29 Pleasant View fatal house fire were most likely from oxygen tanks, said Assistant State Fire Marshal Patrick Barker.

The oxygen tanks were stored in the bedroom and used for breathing oxygen by the home's resident, Carol Pospisil, age 66, of 161 Palm Lane, who died in the blaze, Barker said. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, he said. No other victims were found at the scene, Barker said.
