Turn the page, or move on?

Last week's update in this space on the West Virginia University vs. Richard Rodriguez lawsuit over the former coach's $4 million buyout was almost on time, but not quite. The column was written on Monday evening for an early Tuesday deadline. By late Tuesday afternoon there were rumors surfacing that Rodriguez had decided to honor his contract and pay the $4 million. While there were multiple sources claiming there was a settlement pending, there was nothing official and the numbers varied somewhat.

Rod update

As the depositions in the West Virginia University vs. Richard Rodriguez law suit over the $4 million buyout continues, it becomes more clear that the former West Virginia football coach was under the influence of Mike Brown. Brown is Rodriguez's agent and it appears Rodriguez listened to Brown at every turn.

Rainy Monday

Monday had been reserved for a golf outing at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. West Virginia University coaches and athletic department officials were going to be there. Food, drink, golf and insight into the athletic program was on the agenda. The formula seemed right.

A Tigerless tour

OK, how many of you thought Tiger Woods was hamming it up just a bit during the recent U.S. Open when he would bend over grimacing in pain after a golf shot?

Joe going pro

West Virginia University forward Joe Alexander has decided to forego his senior season and enter the NBA draft. The decision comes as no surprise as the gifted Alexander watched his NBA stock rise over the last several weeks. Alexander announced two months ago that he was going to test the NBA waters to see where he might be selected. He did not retain an agent at that time because he said he planned to return to WVU for his senior season.

Could you break 100 at Torrey Pines

Golf enthusiasts will no doubt be keeping an eye on the 108th U.S. Open this week at Torrey Pines in San Diego. And why not? It is traditionally the toughest event on the tour providing golf fans a chance to see the professionals struggle with the conditions the United States Golf Association deems necessary to determine the national champion.

Perry sizing up Ryder Cup

By PGA Tour standards Kenny Perry is an old man. No, 47 is not old unless you are a little league baseball player and your coach is that age. Then 47 is old.

Huggins gets his man

Bob Huggins' impact on the West Virginia University basketball program has been immediate. While he did not inherit a bare bones closet, he quickly put his stamp on the program. Once hired in April of '07 he successfully pushed for the building of a $20 million basketball training complex.

Pat gets it

There have been more than a few disturbing stories coming out of Morgantown recently, not all of which have anything to do with the athletic department. If you are looking for a bright spot you need look no further than Pat White. Of course White is WVU's quarterback and is prepping for his final season at WVU. And White is not the only feel good story participating in athletics at WVU, but he is certainly front and center.

Wild times at WVU

This could be a soap opera for television and Mike Garrison would have the lead role. I am referring to the turmoil which has seemed to dog West Virginia University's new president since he took office in August.
