School budget updated

by Kate Evans

The proposed 2013-2014 budget for Morgan County Schools was updated with more current funding amounts, and is still under consideration before a May 21 approval hearing.

The school general current expense fund is now estimated at $23,905,865. The special revenue fund is projected at $4,052,442. The capital projects fund is still at $61,910.

The general current expense fund for 2013-2014 was originally estimated at $23,901,503 and the special revenue fund at $4,105,128.

A public hearing on the school budget is set for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the school board office.

Budget publication change

The proposed budget for Morgan County Schools appears in this week’s issue of Morgan Messenger.

The proposed school budget is posted on the county school website and copies are available for public inspection at the school board office during regular business hours, said School Treasurer Nancy White.

According to state guidelines, the proposed budget must be made available for public inspection 10 days prior to the public hearing and must also be published as a legal advertisement.

Debate on issue

White said that some state school business officials had questioned the cost of publishing the budget in newspapers along with the lengthy list of vendors before budget adoption.

School board president David Ambrose said there had been considerable debate at the State Legislature on the newspaper publication issue.
